The Wise Penny, located at 5902 York Road, Baltimore, seeks applicants for Store Manager.

The Wise Penny, a thrift store owned and operated by The Junior League of Baltimore, provides quality new and “gently used” clothing and household items at affordable prices.  Proceeds are used for funding community projects.  Since opening in 1970, The Wise Penny has raised over $2.5 million to support The Junior League and its programs.

Job Description:  The Wise Penny Store Manager is a non-exempt, full time employee responsible for the smooth operation of The Wise Penny.  This position supervises and works closely with staff, interns, and volunteers to provide quality customer service to shoppers and donors of The Wise Penny.  Working knowledge of critical daily operational systems including sales transactions, donation receiving, merchandise preparation and pricing, merchandising, stockroom, and staffing coverage is a must.  The Store Manager works with minimal supervision and is responsible for opening and closing the store on time, managing the sales floor, conducting sales transactions, direction and support of staff and volunteers, and handling emergencies or unanticipated events.  The successful candidate would be responsible for the financial success of The Wise Penny in meeting and exceeding the sales goals.

Primary Responsibilities:  Deliver excellent service to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.  Create business strategies to attract new customers, expand store traffic, and enhance profitability.  Manage the store supervisor and sales associates including, but not limited to: ensuring compliance with the employee manual and taking disciplinary actions as necessary, preparing evaluations in conjunction with the Fundraising Vice President of The Junior League of Baltimore, and creating weekly work schedules.  Open and close The Wise Penny on time, adhering to shop opening and closing routines.  Operate the Clover point of sale system, conduct sales transactions and ensure that only authorized individuals have access to the cash register.  Prepare and maintain visual displays on the sales floor and fill in displays as items are sold.  Develop and arrange promotional material and in-store displays.  Motivate the sales team to meet sales objectives by training and mentoring staff.  Maintain a staffing and volunteer schedule and plan that ensures appropriate store coverage.  Manage the donation and inventory process.  Undertake store administration duties such as managing store budgets and updating financial records.  Monitor supply levels and order new items.  Ensure store compliance with health and safety regulations. Engage customers by inviting them to sign up for the Wise Penny e-mail list, providing information about The Wise Penny, Junior League of Baltimore, and donation guidelines.  Respond to customer complaints and concerns in a professional manner.   Hire staff as necessary in conjunction with the Personnel Committee of The Junior League of Baltimore.  Train and oversee new staff.  Perform other duties as required in order to complete tasks.

Weekly work schedule: Flexible hours required to cover the store business hours, events and needs, including some evenings and weekends (40 hours per week).

Reports to:  The Store Manager reports directly to the Fundraising Vice President of The Junior League of Baltimore, Inc.

Requirements:  High school diploma or equivalent qualification.  Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or relevant field preferred.  Previous cash handling experience is required, as are retail math and analytical skills.  A minimum of 3 years experience working in a retail environment, ideally in a managerial role.  Computer, phone, and digital marketing experience are a plus.  Strong leadership and customer management abilities.  Customer service-oriented with in-depth knowledge of basic business management processes.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  The ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs and stand for long periods of time.

Compensation: $39,000 – $53,000 a year depending on experience.
